Woodchat Shrike

Lanius senator

The features of this juvenile bird, a long-stayer in the dunes near the famous Texel Spoonbill breeding site de Muy, initiated some discussion since it was thought to be possibly of the race niloticus, which breeds in the Middle East. This mainly because of its large white wing-patch. However, other juvenile Woodchats also seem to show this extent of white in the wing, so it is as yet unclear what features to look for to really clinch the identification as a niloticus.
