Two peculiar ducks have been present for a while now in the canal opposite my house in Leiden. At first I saw one bird asleep, partially hidden in the vegetation, and I couldn't make out what it was. Later, when searching for it again (now equipped with camera and bins), I found that there were actually two birds that showed some differences in plumage from each other.
Parent lines are always difficult to discern when judging hybrids, but these birds show an obvious influence of Mallard genes, as most of the hindbody is like a male Mallard. Flanks, head and bill shape more resemble that of Wigeon, but it's hard to be 100% sure that no other genes have been involved!
