Probably because of the mild weather during the last months of the year 2000, several terns were seen in the little harbour of Den Oever, in North-Holland. Apart from 1 or 2 Common Terns Sterna hirundo, a late Arctic S. paradisaea and several Black Terns Chlidonias niger, also 2 White-winged Black Terns C. leucopterus (an adult and a juvenile) were regularly seen foraging here, every now and then flocking together with the many Little Gulls Larus minutus wintering here (which is not so common either). Although my first attempt to see these birds was unsuccessful, I managed to get nice views of the juvenile somewhat later in December. Max Berlijn even succeeded in taking some pictures, which are presented here.
Unfortunately this juvenile, which was in poor condition, was later (27 December) killed by a Magpie Pica pica.
