White-letter Hairstreak

Satyrium w-album

Picture: Teus Luijendijk

An extremely rare species in The Netherlands. This small population was rediscovered by a volunteer for the Dutch butterfly conservation organisation. The spot is not far away from the previously known stake-out for this species (actually in the same general area - a woodland in the mid of town), so it is very unlikely that the butterflies ever left the site completely and returned later.
This is the more understandable considering the animal's habits: they often rest high in the treetops and only show themselves during sunny periods, when they chase one another. The picture was made through a telescope. Unfortunately this individual shows a somewhat damaged rear wing, exactly where the white W should show.
