Madeira Firecrest
Regulus (ignicapillus) madeirensis
Pictures: Teus Luijendijk
Until recently considered a race of Firecrest Regulus ignicapillus, this taxon has recently been given species status. Although it resembles ignicapillus, this madeirensis taxon is clearly different in head pattern, more blackish wings, slightly longer bill and especially calls, which are not unlike Yellow-browed Warbler Phylloscopus inornatus, when heard from a distance. Besides this type it gives a variety of other calls, some of which more resemble Goldcrest R. regulus than Firecrest.
