Broad-billed Prion

Broad-billed Prion

Pachyptila vittata

Prion identification is notoriously difficult. I experienced that, after some training and given that viewing conditions are good, it is possible to distinguish between Antarctic P. desolata , Slender-billed P. belcheri  and Fairy Prion P. turtur  at sea. However, it appeared to be frustratingly difficult to obtain good views of Broad-billed Prion P. vittata. One would expect that the huge bill stands out, even during the at times erratic prion flight. In fact, I only once saw a 'perfect' Broad-billed, but I was unable to film that individual. Instead, I made a lot of recordings of supposed Antarctic Prions, which in fact indeed turned out to be Antarctics. Some birds, however, showed rather big bills and those are shown here.
